After working with older children and teenagers in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) setting I have identified a problem which could easily be resolved leading to a more for filling learning experience.
Many of the KS3 and 4 pupils in a SEN school are often practicing and repeating work that is targeted at Early years, KS1 or 2 children in a mainstream school. This is often english and math related. This can cause a problem for the teaching staff to find resources that are age appropriate.
Getting the pupils to engage in there worksheets could be a challenge. I often heard comments such as 'This is for babies', 'this isn't for me it says KS1' or 'Im not doing this! it looks too easy'. For teenage pupils having worksheets that have tasks such as 'count the ladybird spots' or 'colour in the caterpillars' can be both frustrating and lower their confidence.
This is why I have begun to create age appropriate worksheets for KS3 and KS4 SEN schools. The pupils can develop what is appropriate to their learning while feeling that it is made for them.
